The Joseph E. Zaloga Unit 1520 of the American Legion was chartered in 1947 with 40 members.  The Unit has grown over the years to be the largest Unit  in Albany County with over 600 members.  We are an active Unit participating in all of the auxiliary programs including the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Children and Youth, Americanism, Empire Girls State and Legislation.  Our Poppy Fund drive began in May 1948 and through the years the donations we have received have been used to fund our Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation programs.  Our Unit, in conjunction with the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion and Squadron 1520 of the Sons of the American Legion, participated in the sponsorship of a Hospice Room at the Stratton VA Medical Center.  And, with the help of our Legionnaires and the Sons of the American Legion, we sponsor an annual Halloween and Christmas party for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The "Ice Creram Social/Meet the Easter Bunny" party has been so popular it has become an annual event.  Many of our members serve not only at the Unit level but also take committees at the county and district levels.  At all levels of service, the members of the Joseph E. Zaloga Unit 1520 continue to serve God and Contry as they fulfill the aims and purposes of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
